Yule Blessings, Protocols, and Fetishes

Hello beautiful beings,

Monday will be Yule, the darkest night of the year. I find myself thinking back to when I lived in Anchorage, Alaska, when on the 21st of December there would only be light from 10:30am-3pm. You go to bed in the dark, wake in the dark. You build a habit of sleeping with a mask on so that whether it was the depth of wither or the height of summer where the night is that same short length, you can still get shut-eye and trust that your clock knew the time better than your body does.

The winter is a place of slumber. Snow lays at your feet, or in the case of being here in Austin, tonight there thunderstorms. Either way the story is the same – stay inside for the night, tell stories, stay where it is warm. Gifts are given to loved ones to say you have been thought of, and today I feel blessed for having received home-made biscotti from a friend who shows the love language of food from 2,000 miles away. Packages are wrapped up ready for the House Haven Christmas gathering, green and white shapes set aside to say “I thought of you,” “I care,” “I hope you think of me when you enjoy these.”

Blessed journeys to all of us through this darkest of nights. From miles away we think of loved ones, family flickering on computer screens or held in memory for those no longer with us. We remember 300,000 Americans who were with us last Yule and Christmas who were with us last year, and give such gratitude for those who are with us at our sides, or safely locked in their own homes. May each of us stay warm, stay sheltered, stay safe. May we all pull through the dark times we are in and emerge into the light through the turning of the seasons.
