Gratitude, Cirque, and Altar Building
Hello beautiful beings,
This past week has felt like such a blur. This week held more body challenges including more chiropractor visits, a new SI belt, and even a requirement that until the belt came in that I had to wear my corsets out – which led to some great gender queering. I get down on myself sometimes when my body isn’t agreeing with me, and then I stop and blink at what I did manage with the love and support from therapists, doctors, friends coming over to clean, vulnerable rambling to dear ones, and notes of digital support.
In the past week I managed to write a guest blog and appear on a podcast, both of which will be out in a few weeks. I collaborated with a dear friend on their project, played board games, and had dinner with new friends. I watched some of the Hump! Porn festival “best of” with a mix of queer folks, led a discussion on edge play, and attended part of the Shibaricon reunion. I had hard conversations with a family member, taught my class helping people discover and explore the kink community, and had someone sing me an Ani Difranco song. I led an intimate class on rituals in dominance and submission, went to a dental appointment, and caught up with a friend who will be visiting me around summer solstice. I also had my heart blown wide by leading a class on gender dysphoria and euphoria before going to the park to sit in the sun with a gaggle of trans men roleplaying their lesbian joys of delicious food, playing catch, live music, and heartfelt openness.
I was and am so deeply blessed. My heart is wide, and I am profoundly touched by everyone who helped make it all happen while I also couldn’t get out of bed at times.
Let me make this clear – this is not a statement that people with visible and invisible disabilities can and should somehow push through things. This is not intended to be inspiration porn, that look, if he can do all of this so can I. This is me having profound gratitude. This is me blown away. This is me carrying privilege in the form of having access to friends, a safe home, food in my house, and a job I can access from home and then go back to bed afterwards for a nap fueled by Colorado’s best.
This weekend is set to be powerful and passionate too when it comes to an opportunity I have to teach at Cirque du Earth. Registration is closed, but I am looking forward to teaching “Rope as Sacred Ritual,” “Fleshing It Out: Body Modification Sacred and Profane,” “The Queerness of Magic, the Magic of Queerness,” and appearing on the Trans Panel. Wait, my patrons and friends might be saying, where is the self-care? Where is taking care of your body? I have planned already to take Saturday daytime away from the computer and invested a while back in a standing/sitting desk, there is delicious food in my refrigerator, and I know that those classes are all ones that light me up – I’m excited to share them with folks!

Whether to remember a loved one, show devotion along a specific path, or to create a quiet space where someone can reflect on their day, altars serve a wide variety of purposes. They can provide a focus for a person’s prayers, affirmations, energy, intentions, or something else entirely. Some altar construction is highly formalized with specific dictates as to what it must feature or cannot include, some are crafted for specific holidays or remembrances, while others are free-form creative expressions with no specific framework to draw upon. Let’s gather together to share our own practices, experiences, and systems for how we individually or collectively construct these tools in our life.
