A student just wrote and said “I’m sorry you were raped.” in the middle of his short email about him liking my class. This is what I ended up saying in response. I wanted to post it here, get it out of my head…

Stories make up the past of where we have been and transform us piece at a time into the people we will become. Rape happens to be one of my stories, as does love, romance, absurdity, adventure, travel, gummi bears, drinking, denim, lust, compassion and peace. Its all part of the journey… and I would not be me without those thumbprints on my being.
